Diamond DA42 flies fully automated mission!
FlySmart-FBW23 – project goal achieved! In the current phase of flight testing, a fully automatically controlled mission of the Diamond DA42 test aircraft was completed for the first time on September 18, 2015 at Wiener Neustadt Airfield, Austria (LOAN).

An automatically controlled mission consists of
AutoTakeOff | Automatic take-off from standstill after prior manual alignment of the aircraft on the runway |
AutoCruise | Automatic flight along a 4D trajectory |
AutoLand | Automatic landing including roll-out and braking until the aircraft comes to a standstill on the runway |
In the course of the FlySmart-FBW23 project to date, the automatic take-off was first evaluated after several automatic landings (DA42 Autoland). Controlling the aircraft on the centerline of the runway proved to be a particular challenge, especially at low taxiing speeds. With the completion of the take-off tests, flight testing is now in the final phase of evaluating fully automated missions.
